New Flamenco Concerts

All the latest information about the new season of flamenco concerts in Teatro Flamenco Madrid, led by Teresa Laiz, accompanied by guest flamenco artists.

Presentation of a new programme of flamenco concerts in Madrid

The launch of the new season of flamenco concerts in Madrid, led by Teresa Laiz, marks an important moment for the city’s musical scene. With numerous concerts already announced and others still pending confirmation, this event promises to offer a wide variety of performances throughout the year at Teatro Flamenco Madrid. There are currently dates set for concerts in April, May, October and November with others to be confirmed.

 

In sessions of 90 minutes, the concerts are centred around different themes. 

 

Classical and Flamenco is performed by solo musicians playing two of the most representative of Spain, the castanets and the guitar, and is designed to provide a journey through Spanish musical history from an innovative perspective from traditional, Spanish classical music to flamenco music, Classical and Flamenco promises to be an exciting and passionate show.

 

Spanish Character is a show based on traditional Spanish music with a touch of the unexpected, a musical meeting of different cultures, times and styles. The Spanish soprano, Marta Casas, accompanies Teresa Laiz in this spectacular show.

 

Divine is the third show to be announced which promises an out-of-this-world unforgettable flamenco experience at Teatro Flamenco Madrid.

 

The presence of different guest artists will add a touch of variety and excitement to each flamenco show. Without a doubt, these concerts will be remembered as highlights of Madrid’s cultural calendar. 

 

Who is Teresa Laiz?

 

Originally from Madrid (1966) Teresa Laiz’s love of castanets began over three decades ago while she was studying Spanish Traditional Dance. Under the guiding hands of renowned teachers such as Victor Ullate, Ana Mercedes, Rafael de Córdoba and others her artistic focus was centred around traditional Spanish dance and flamenco until 2003 when she began to explore new artistic frontiers with the fusion of theatre, music and dance in shows inspired by the works of Federico García Lorca.

In the year 2005, she had the opportunity to meet Maestro José de Udaeta, who immersed her in the passionate world of concierto castanets. From 2006 onwards, Teresa Laiz de took her first steps as a castanet soloist, creating her own music and captivating audiences with her technically skillful and passionate repertoire, including classical, Spanish and traditional music.

 

Educative and Artistic Contributions

 

With a wide experience in the sphere of education, Teresa Laiz has been a teacher of such different disciplines as classical ballet, spanish dance, creative dance, ballroom dance, flamenco and castanets since 1987, in a variety of dance centres as well as her own academy. She has also given classes of Concierto Castanets and Dance Technique with Castanets in the renowned Centre of Flamenco Art and Spanish Dance, “Amor de Dios” in Madrid, consolidating her teaching experience. She continues to teach in the Ma Non Troppo Performing Arts School in Madrid. 

 

International Recognition of Teresa Laiz’s Artistic Career


Her presence on the stage stretches across a range of media and locations, from TV and radio appearances in channels such as Rai TV, Canal Nord Catalunya Televisió, TV Costa Brava amongst others, to performances in theatres and venues both in Spain, such as Madrid, Avila, Barcelona, Valladolid, Paris, Viena and New York. She has participated in well known festivals such as the Porta Ferrada de Sant Feliu de Guíxols International Festival and the International Castanet Festival, with a variety of different musical accompaniment, from solo performances to performances accompanied with string quartets and symphony orchestras. Her most recent performances in such emblematic venues as the Palace of Liria and Carnegie Hall in New York are proof of her high profile presence on the international flamenco scene.

 

Achievements and Future Projects

 

She has shared a stage with such well-known artists as Montserrat Martín Caballé, Luis Santana (Baritone), Marika Spadafino (Soprano), Carmen Solís (Soprano), Nancy Fabiola Herrera (Mezzosoprano), Aquiles Machado (Tenor), Sílvia Pérez Cruz (Singer), Clara Montes (Singer), José de Udaeta (Castanet Concierto), Antonio Reyes (Guitarist), Adrián Galia (Flamenco dancer), Sergio Bernal (Flamenco dancer).

 

Teresa has been awarded with the Progressive Musicians International Music Competition, receiving the prize in the Soloist and Ensemble categories which gave her the opportunity to perform at the Carnegie Hall in New York in 2022 and 2023.

 

She published an album as a solo castanet artist, Let The Soul Ring Out, in 2007 and took part in other recordings including Santi Vendrell’s Parlem-ne in 2008, Songs for Eating and Drinking by Els in 2010 and Beautiful Promises with the US singer La Firu in 2022. 

 

She also participated in the soundtrack of the film, “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote” by Roque Baños in 2018, directed by Terry Gilliam, and published her own study course Teresa Laiz’s Castanet Method (Método de Castañuelas Teresa Laiz).

 

She recently completed her studies in orchestra conducting in the Maestro Navarro Lara School of Orchestra and Band Conducting. She is the founder and director of the OIR, in English the Rare Instrument Orchestra, and the Madrid Castanet Choir.

 

In 2009 she founded the International Festival of Castanets, the only event in the world dedicated exclusively to this instrument in all its facets, and in 2019 she founded the Online Castanet School. She also organised the 1st Teresa Laiz International Castanet Contest in February 2023.

 

In addition, Teresa Laiz, in her concerts, reveals the deep-seated cultural aspect of this flamenco instrument presenting the castanets as a solo instrument with original compositions. Her repertoire ranges from a wide range of musical styles from the classical to the popular, from Spain and other parts of the world. 

 

She is currently immersed in the preparations for the XI International Castanet Festival and the III Teresa Laiz International Castanet Contest to be held in February 2025.
